2020 was a good year for Canadian immigration and things are sure going to be better in the year 2021. The immigration agenda for 2021 with the government saying that it will welcome over 1.2 million immigrants into the country over the next couple of years.

Multi-year level plans

In the month of October 2020, Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Immigration Minister announced new plans spanning over a couple of years that sees the country welcoming 401,000 new permanent residents in the year 2021, the greatest numbers in Canadian history. Immigration in 2020 was limited due to COVID-19, urging the government to take measures for the coming years to make up for the low immigration numbers in 2020.

Canada’s Express Entry System issued the highest number of invitations ever!

Despite the travel restrictions and COVID-19, Canada still saw a huge number of immigrants coming in via the Express Entry system. On some weeks, Canada has been sending out over 5000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) per draw, bringing the number to 102,350 in the month of October last year, making it one of the highest number of invitations issued in one year through the Canadian Express Entry System.

Online learning for International Students

Due to COVID-19, the world took a turn and the natural course changed, for a lot of things. Education wasn’t untouched, and in the year 2020, about 1.7 billion people completed their education online across the globe.

The Canadian government has made sure that no one faces the brunt of it, and the students studying from a distance can get the same opportunities as they would have had had they been physically studying at Canadian institutions.

International students enrolled in Canadian educational institutions but studying online and/or from a distance can use their time to apply for the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) upon the completion of their studies from a Canadian designated learning institute.

Upgrading the immigration system

In the next five year, Canada plans to invest $750.3 million to modernize the Canadian immigration system so that it can support the Canadian immigration plan of having about 1,2 million new immigrants to the country in the span of the next three years.

To make this possible, Canada plans to modernize its paper-based case management system to a digital platform to process the influx its expecting, and thus enhancing operational efficiency, client service and program integrity.

And thus, 2021 seems to be a positive year for Canadian immigration and foreign nationals planning to move to the country, especially with the government planning to welcome a number of people higher than ever before.
